A convicted killer is preparing to leave Angola State Penitentiary.
Lane Nelson, will be released in April, 2011. He is only the second murderer in two years to receive a pardon.
He was a first time offender when he was sentenced to die for killing a man after hitch hiking. Nelson spent more than two years on death row and a judge overturned his punishment, five days before he was scheduled to die, citing poor counsel.
Over the last two decades, he earned national recognition while writing for the prison newspaper, The Angolite. His willingness to volunteer and good behavior helped secure his freedom.
