OPELOUSAS, LA (NBC33) — An employee for the City of Opelousas is behind bars for allegedly stealing city funds that totaled a little less than $12,000.
The Opelousas Police Department arrested Racheal St. Romain for Felony Theft, Monetary Instrument Abuse, and Malfeasance in Office after an investigation revealed that she was depositing city checks into her personal bank account.
“The case was brought to light through an internal investigation by the Executive Department,” Sgt. Jody White, Opelousas Police Department, explained. “They realized something was missing, or something was wrong. After they went as far as they could with their own investigation, they got the police involved.”
Officials say the checks had been in her possession for approximately one year. They totaled $11,941.60.
St. Romain was employed with the city as the Executive Branch of Accounts Payable for just under six years.
St. Romain has been placed on administrative leave by the City of Opelousas Executive Office.
