With a week until the July 4 holiday, fire officials are reminding you to take extra precautions when lighting off fireworks this year.
Fire Marshal Butch Browning is reminding those setting off fireworks this year to be aware of their surroundings.
Don't set off these illuminations near wooded areas or dry, grassy areas. Browning also stresses the importance of keeping kids away from fireworks, and making sure you keep a safe distance or you could get seriously hurt.
"There will be about 3,000 to 5,000 injuries during fireworks season. Most of these injuries are burns, trauma to limbs, fingers and arms,” stated Browning. “There will be eye injuries and there will be other types of injuries associated with fireworks.”
Browning also reminds people to double-check their parish rules before setting off fireworks. Regulations for setting off firecrackers varies.
