NATIONAL NEWS (CNN) — Oklahoma City police are looking into the death of 13-month-old baby boy who was found dead in his family's bathtub.
The child's mother left him for just a few minutes while she ran outside, but she she accidentally locked herself out of the house.
Police say broke a window to get back inside, but it was too late.
It happened near NW 48th Street and Hamilton Drive Tuesday.
"The mother left the child in the bathtub and stepped outside for just a second and was going to come back in and check on the child and managed to lock herself out," Oklahoma City Police MSgt. Gary Knight said.
She broke a window and crawled through it to get back inside and get to her child.
"She ended up breaking into the house to go and check on her child only to find the child face down in the tub. The child was transported to an area hospital where unfortunately he was pronounced dead," Knight said.
"A child of that age, their heads are typically bigger than the rest of their bodies. So, if they fall over in the water they can't lift themselves up," Mike Roy of EMSA said. "Children being left alone in bathtubs happens more often than we think. There are studies out there that show one in three children in a household are left alone when they're bathing and that should never happen."
Police say it appears to be a tragic accident.
