Denham Springs, La (NBC33) — After being talked about for months, the state's largest Sam’s Club opened their doors early Thursday morning. The grand opening has Denham Springs city leaders smiling.
“This is like hitting a grand slam home run in the 7th game of the World Series,” stated Denham Springs Mayor Jimmy Durbin.
It's the latest in a sting of businesses to set up shop in Livingston Parish, including the Wal-Mart in Watson and lots of smaller mom-and-pop shops all across the parish.
The moves have people like Tommy Cowsar glad about the lack of moving they'll need to be doing.
“It’s going to be great for me because now I don't have to go to Baton Rouge,” stated Cowsar. “I can spend more time in Livingston Parish and not have to spend my time on the road.”
The parish doesn't see a lot of money generated by the stores, but the money they do see goes to things the parish needs to improve, like roads and the jail.
Livingston Parish President Layton Ricks says the increase in business sends a strong message to everyone thinking about opening up shop or even passing through on the interstate.
“This store - along with Bass Pro, all the restaurants, everything that’s coming along - we hope will show people that Livingston Parish is vibrant, growing, and doing well,” stated Ricks.
