WHISKEY BAY, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: Today’s search at Whiskey Bay was part of a training exercise. However, the divers with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office have assisted in that location over the past weeks of the investigation.
ORIGINAL STORY: The search continues today for clues in the case of missing Lafayette cyclist and ULL student Mickey Shunick.
Dive teams were deployed on Wednesday, June 20 at Whiskey Bay. Shunick’s bike was discovered at that same location on Sunday, May 27. The bike showed damage to one of the wheels and detectives believe that it was intentionally dumped there. The Louisiana State Police are conducting a forensic investigation on the bike.
This is the third time divers have been deployed to search the murky waters for clues. Officials have not indicated why they have chosen to return to the location today.
Mickey Shunick went missing on Saturday, May 19 shortly before 2:00 a.m. Massive search parties have searched the Lafayette and surrounding area for the past week. The first breakthrough in the case came on Friday, May 25 when surveillance images captured Shunick riding her bike along the path she was expected to be riding towards her home. Three vehicles of interest were also identified. Two were ruled out as potential suspects.
Anyone with information should call the Lafayette Police Department at (337) 291-8633.
