ST. AMANT, LA — Ascension Parish Chief Criminal Deputy Tony Bacala reports the arrest of a St. Amant couple for felony theft.
On June 6, 2012 the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an internal theft involving two members of the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department. After being alerted of possible discrepencies in the fire departments bank account the departments chief and president conducted an inquriy in to the matter.
The inquiry revealed that at least $15,000 of fraudulent transactions were made on the fire departments bank account over the past six months.
Further investigation into the fire department’s bank records revealed that the fire departments treasurer, Captain Aaron Gautreaux and his wife, Melissa Gautreaux, who was also a member of the fire department, were responsible for making the unauthorized transcactions. The couple was using the fire department’s money for personal finances such as paying their cable bill and paying their car notes. Additionally the couple obtained a debit card in the name of the fire department which was also not authorized.
Additional charges may be forthcoming pending further investigation into the fire departments bank records. Preliminarily, investigators believe the dollar amount of the theft could rise well above $15,000 initial figure, Bacala said.
On June 6, 2012 Aaron Lee Gautreaux, 33, of 13162 Spellman Lambert Road St. Amant, Louisiana was arrested and charged with one count of felony theft ($15, 000). He is currently out of jail on a $15,000 bond set by Judge Thomas Kliebert.
