BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Baton Rouge’s newest weapon against crime was launched today. The Baton Rouge Area Violence Elimination Project, or BRAVE, will put 5 Baton Rouge Police Officers into the 70805 zip code starting next week.
The officers will work with community and religious leaders to help cut down on the drug and violent crime epidemic in the area. The zip code is responsible for thirty percent of the murders in Baton Rouge.
"We know it will work,” Chief Dewayne White, Baton Rouge Police Department, declared. “It's worked in other jurisdiction. It will work here and I believe through persistence and determination and believing that it will work we will ensure its success."
Similar programs in Boston, Chicago and other big cities have resulted in a reduction in violent crime of between 30 and 50 percent.
Tonight on NBC33 News at 5:00 p.m. we will give more details about how the program plans to see success. And we want to know what you think about the new program. Tell us your thoughts on the NBC33 Facebook page .
