Baton Rouge, La — he Dufrocq School’s fifth-grade students were given the privilege this year of writing the official children’s book, “Happy Birthday Louisiana!,” for the Louisiana Bicentennial Education Project. This book was developed through the support of state Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and the Louisiana Bicentennial Commission. Dardenne held a special presentation for the school’s book this spring in the Louisiana State Library.
The project was supported by Louisiana Historical Legacy Award-winning author and former teacher Dee Scallan, who met with students several times throughout the fall of 2011 to guide them through the writing and illustration process for the book. The story is historical fiction outlining the beginnings of Louisiana and continuing through the Bicentennial celebration in April. The book was published and is now housed in a coveted space at the Louisiana State Library.
Fifth grader Kathryn Weston (pictured with the book), was just one of the students who contributed to the book’s storyline.
