Gonzales, La — Following two public input meetings that were held earlier this month, Ascension Parish officials have posted a PDF format slide presentation for preview detailing plans for a proposed parish road program that will go before voters in November.
The presentation, now available at www.ascensionparish.net , was made during a special Transportation Committee meeting Tuesday night at the Gonzales Courthouse. Michael Songy with CSRS engineering firm presented the presentation and answered questions from the committee.
“With the growth in the parish over the past 10 years, growing at about 40 percent, we are in the same situation that the school board is in,” President Tommy Martinez said. “They’re going to have to build a new school, one every year for the next twenty years, so we keep building and people keep coming. When we had all these meetings for the Master Plan, everybody would say, ‘We don’t want any more growth until we have infrastructure.’ This is an opportunity to present a plan to the people of Ascension Parish that will help infrastructure along at a quicker pace. If we continue what we are doing, the only thing we will be able to do is maintain what we have, and we may not be able to do that adequately.”
In November, if voters approve a proposed half-cent sales tax for unincorporated areas of Ascension Parish, Songy said it would generate about $8 million annually. This would also provide for $80 million in initial bonding capacity, he said.
