NBC NATIONAL NEWS — It's the peak of flea season and veterinarians say this year could be one of the worst. And some of the prevention products you're using may not even be doing the trick.
"I'd say we probably are in for a pretty rough season for fleas and ticks," said veterinarian Dr. Laura Braun.
Doctor Braun says her office sees between ten and twenty pets each day, just for fleas.
Vets say getting rid of the pests is challenge, especially because many products on the market don't seem to work as well anymore.
"We do tend to see the efficacy wear off a little," said Dr. Braun.
One treatment Doctor Braun does recommend is a product called Capstar.
"That product is given as a pill and begins working within 30 minutes to kill all the fleas on the dog or cat," Dr. Braun said.
Doctor Braun says the trick is year round prevention, but it's not just treating your dog. Without treating your home, those bugs will keep multiplying by the thousands.
Even though experts are predicting a worse than normal flea and tick season, there is good news. Prices on popular prevention medications are coming down.
