Nancy Malone with the La Capital Area Red Cross came on Baton Rouge Lagniappe to speak about Hurricane Preparedness.
Malone said that now is the time to stock up on items such as flashlights, batteries, water, and non-perishable items, and she advised residents not to wait until a storm is on the way to get these needed items. Malone also advised residents to make plans now to protect their pets, fill up gas tanks if less than half way full, and to get extra medicines for children and the elderly.
Malone then said that there will be a shelter volunteer training class in June to prepare volunteers to assist those who will need to evacuate to a shelter during a hurricane.
Malone related that after Hurricane Katrina, over 90,000 people were displaced from their homes and sought refuge in shelters and that this training will help to prepare volunteers for these situations. For more information visit www.batonrouge.redcross.org or call (225) 291-4533.
