Louisiana residents to save money this weekend on hurricane supplies

Byron Henderson with the La. Dept of Revenue came on BR Lagniappe to speak about about the Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday . 

Henderson said that this weekend, May 26 and May 27, Louisiana residents can stock up on flashlights, generators, and other storm-related items free of the 4 percent state sales tax . 

The 2012 Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday exempts the first $1500.00 of the purchase price of such itmes as flashlights, lanterns, and candles, portable radios, two-way radios, and weather-band radios, tarps and other flexible waterproof sheeting, ground anchor systems, straps or tie-down kits, fuel tanks, batteries such as AA, C, D, or 9-volt.  (Auto and boat batteries are ineligible), cell phone batteries and chargers, non-electric food storage coolers, portable generators, shutter devices made solely for preventing window damage, carbon monoxide detectors, and "blue ice" ( and similiar re-usable cooling products).   

The state sales tax holiday does not apply to purchases at airports, public lodging establishments, hotels, convenience stores, or entertainment complexes.
