LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — The State Police are currently investigating an officer involved shooting that happened on North Buchanan Street in Lafayette.
The Lafayette Police Department was advised at roughly 8:22 p.m. of a robbery that had occurred at a convenience store. A description of the suspect was issued and an officer located a man matching the description a little over thirty minutes later. The man was spotted by the officer about a block and a half away on N. Buchanan Street near the Wal-Mart.
Officials tell us the officer confronted the suspect, and when he did the man became combative. We’re told the two began to struggle and the suspect attempted to grab the officer’s gun from his holster.
During the incident the suspect punched the officer in the face.
Multiple gun shots were fired during the struggle and the suspect was struck. Acadian Ambulance confirmed that the suspect was listed in critical condition.
The officer is also being treated at a local hospital for the injuries he received during the struggle.
All officer involved shootings are turned over to the Louisiana State Police for investigation.
