Toddler only survivor after crash killed his parents, unborn sister

Anthony, NM (KTSM) — A 2-year-old boy is the only survivor of his family after a crash killed both of his parents, and his newborn baby sister.

The crash happened on Wednesday morning [1] on Westside Dr. and Vinton Rd. in Anthony, New Mexico.

According to Doña Ana County Sheriff's investigators, Andrew Valenzuela, 22, drove through a stop sign at the intersection, and crashed into a white pickup truck that was going east on Vinton Rd.

Valenzuela died at the scene.

Valenzuela's pregnant girlfriend, Karla Diaz, 21, was a passenger in the car, along with the couple's 2-year-old son.

Diaz and the boy were taken to the hospital in El Paso with serious injuries.

Diaz delivered a baby girl immediately after arriving at the hospital. Both Diaz and the newborn baby died a short time later.

The 2-year-old boy has severe head injuries and remains in critical condition.

Deputies said no one in Valenzuela's vehicle was wearing a seat belt, and the boy's car seat was not properly secured.

The driver of the pickup was treated for minor cuts and has since been released from the hospital.
