Baton Rouge, La — On May 11, 224 students from 56 states and territories participated in the Raytheon National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Orlando. Of the state teams, the Louisiana Team placed 23rd overall nationally with three student members from Glasgow Middle School.
Glasgow students Elvin Gu placed 33rd, Louie Kam placed 106th and Mason Guillot placed 112th, while Anthony Tran, the fourth state team member from a New Orleans school, placed 187th. Gu also was one of nine students recognized as a three-time participant in the national competition. Gu and Kam are eighth graders at Glasgow Middle, and Mason Guillot is a seventh grader at the school. Last year, a Glasgow student, Scott Wu, won the National Middle School MATHCOUNTS Championship.
Students qualified for the Louisiana state team at the State MATHCOUNTS competition held in Pineville, La., in March. All five of the Glasgow students who participated in the state competition placed in the top 12. In that contest, Gu placed first, Kam placed second and Guillot placed third. Glasgow’s team placed first overall at the state level. The state competition is organized and sponsored by the Louisiana Society of Professional Engineers.
