Gonzales, La — Ascension Parish officials are expecting a large turnout for the Ascension Parish 2012 Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center.
Ascension Parish Government Environmental Supervisor Terance Irvin said the Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day event will take place on Saturday, May 12 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The expo center is located at 9039 St. Landry Road in Gonzales. Irvin said the event is for Ascension Parish residents only and that a valid ID will be required.
“Our last household hazardous materials collection event serviced around 1,200 cars that brought in a total of nearly 27 tons of materials,” Irvin said. “The year before, we collected nearly 20 tons. So this event should surpass the others if the trend continues.”
Materials to be accepted include a limit of five automobile tires, car and golf cart batteries, cell phones and batteries, electronic equipment, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, home and garden chemicals, household batteries, ink and toner cartridges, latex and oil-based paints, thinners, varnishes, scrap metal in small quantities, rechargeable batteries, televisions, small propane tanks and appliances for scrap metal. They will also accept telephone systems, video cameras and DVR’s, computer accessories, Xboxes, PlayStations and Wii boxes, fax machines, monitors and printers.
Irvin said they will not accept explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, high school lab waste, commercial and governmental facility waste, paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic and glass, hurricane debris or woody waste.
