NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — With the 89th overall selection, in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL draft the Saints acquired Defensive Tackle, Akiem Hicks out of The University of Regina, in Canada. Hicks was the first overall pick for New Orleans.
Hicks originally began his career at LSU, but in 2009, he was declared ineligible by the NCAA after receiving improper transportation and housing. Scouting reports on Hicks show, he has a long and favorable frame. He is raw and explosive and possesses great potential in the NFL.
However, some character questions come into play. Reports indicate, Hick’s struggled to accept coaching at the East/West Shrine Game in Orlando, and with the given allegations at LSU, he will be under intense watch in New Orleans.
University of Wisconsin Wide Receiver, Nick Toon looks to be one of the value picks for the Saints in the draft. Toon possesses greater than average size for and NFL wide receiver with par speed for the position. Toon has a superior understanding of the position, growing up around football his entire life. His father Al Toon was a three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver.
He is a polished route runner understanding leverage, stemming, and selling routes. Ball skills are above average. He also shows a high motor when healthy. Durability at the next level is somewhat of a concern, missing action in both the 2010 and 2011 season.
The following list summarizes the Saints remaining picks in the 2012 draft.
Round 5. Pick 162. Defensive Back, Corey White, Samford
Round 6. Pick 179. Offensive Guard, Andrew Tiller, Syracuse
Round 7. Pick 234. Offensive Tackle, Marcel Jones, Nebraska
