BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: The Baton Rouge Police Department arreted James Sterling, 22, of Baton Rouge last night after he attempted to rob the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Choctaw Drive. Sterling is accused of firing a gun at a police officer who was working an extra duty shift at the location.
The officer fired a shot back at the suspect. The 20 year veteran is currenlty on paid administrative leave, which follows procedure for the department.
Sterling is charged with Attempted First-Degree murder of a Police Officer and Attempted Armed Robbery. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
ORIGINAL STORY: Shortly before 9:00 p.m. the Baton Rouge Police Department was called out to a shooting incident on Choctaw Road.
Sources tell us that the incident occurred near the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Choctaw. We’re told at least half a dozen units responded to the call.
Officials tell us the shooting did involve a law enforcement officer, but no other details were given.
EMS also responded to the scene and says no one was injured and they did not treat any patient at the scene.
