NBC News — Thousands of protesters in Sydney marched through the city's streets calling for tougher restrictions on coal seam gas mining. The disposal of contaminated water is one of the most controversial aspects of the multi-billion dollar industry.
Opponents say there are insufficient safeguards to protect groundwater. Protesters came from various groups across the country including farmers, environmentalists, rural residents and families.
