NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The trial of former US Senator and presidential candidate John Edwards could hinge on testimony offered Tuesday.
Andrew Young, former aide and close friend to Edwards, returned to the witness stand.
Young outlined a complex system he says was created by Edwards to collect money from rich friends, including multi-millionaire Bunny Mellon, to help hide his then pregnant mistress Rielle Hunter.
Young testified that Edwards told him to begin giving Hunter a monthly allowance in May of 2007 after she threatened to expose their affair.
"Andrew Young described John Edward's role as the director of this entire operation. That it was John Edward's idea ultimately to go to Bunny Mellon and ask her for funds that could wind up supporting Rielle Hunter, that Edwards knew about and gave guidance on how the money flow should take place in order to cover the tracks," says legal analyst Hampton Dellinger.
When discussing the intricate plan that funneled money through personal bank accounts Young told the court "It was crazy. We were all scared to death and felt extremely uneasy about it."
In an explosive moment during his testimony Young talked about confronting Edwards with news that Hunter was pregnant.
Young said Edwards responded by calling Hunter "crazy" and using an expletive, harsh words that could come back to haunt the defense if jurors believe Edwards in fact spoke that way about the mother of his child.
