Zachary, La (NBC33) — In Zachary, senior citizens received a lesson in protecting themselves against crime.
The 4th annual All-American Crime Prevention Expo is meant to educate the elderly on ways to avoid getting scammed.
Police say back in 2002, more than $40 billion was stolen from senior citizens across the country.
“We want to give back to our seniors,” said Chief David McDavid with the Zachary Police Department. “They took care of us when we were young, and now it’s our turn to take care of them.”
“We all live on a fixed income and we can't afford for somebody to come and get what little bit we have. We’ve got to keep that,” stated senior citizen Betty Fletcher.
Police say they focused on telemarketing, insurance, and Medicaid fraud at the event.
