BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Voters at the polls today, Saturday, April 21, were getting ready to voice their vote on a special Capital Area Transit Tax proposal.
Red Stick residents were campaigning all day for or against this new transit tax proposal.
Those in favor say the tax proposal say it will double CATS' budget, and will bring a more streamlined public transit system for Baton Rouge.
Those against say the homeowners of Baton Rouge, who usually don't use the bus, will have to pay even higher property taxes.
"It's not fair for the homeowners to have to pay the taxes, when most of the people voting for the taxes, they don't own homes," Danny McRae, resident against the proposed tax, said.
"If we don't pass this, the transit system's going to collapse in July, and that would leave the city of Baton Rouge, the only city in the U.S. without a transit system," Ray Boudreaux, resident in support of the proposed tax, explained.
Other matters up for public vote include a new position for a new Port Allen Police Chief, and a Baker Mayoral seat.
