BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — With gas prices crawling up to a dreadful $4 a gallon, drivers could benefit from some methods for saving money and gas in the coming months. Here are some tips to get you through the hard times.
- Use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. Using other grades brings the risk of lowering your gas mileage 1-2 percent, wasting up to $39 annually.
- Avoid agressive driving and speeding. Rushing trying to get home on the highway can hurt your wallet up to $973 a year!
- Beat the rush hour traffic (or any traffic). Hit the road on off-peak hours to avoid the stop-and-go pattern of traffic. Checking beforehand also helps alleviate that problem.
- Take a carpool. That helps cut cost on gas and wear on your vehicle. Some cities even have High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes for carpooling vehicles to use.
There are many ways to save on gas, but the first step is to be willing to do it.
