NBC NEWS — Spectacular video was captured of Europe's highest active volcano erupting on Thursday, April 12.
Mt. Etna began erupting with a series of explosions that flung ash and smoke 9,000-feet into the air.
A massive cloud obscured the sun for miles, but because of the wind direction, the airport of Catania nearby continued to operate. This was the 24th eruption since January of 2011 and the third time in the past month.
The main area of eruption is near a Sicilian village, but Italian authorities did not issue any warnings of danger to houses and people.
The eruptions died down yesterday afternoon.
