NBC NEWS — Runners dodged zombies today, Saturday, April 14, during a survival-themed race in the Philippines. The idea came from a popular zombie race here in the United States.
Around 5,000 people tackled natural and man-made obstacles on a three-mile course. Two-hundred actors dressed as post-apocalyptic zombies hid behind trees and bushes to surprise unsuspecting runners.
The zombies tried to steal health flags attached to the runners' waists.
Runners that lose all of their flags are considered "dead" but can get additional flags by navigating optional obstacles, often with a swarm of zombies guarding the prize.
Zombies were dressed like those in popular t-v shows, movies and music videos.
A zombie fashioned after Michael Jackson's "Thriller" even participated.
The organizer of Outbreak Manila said themed races helped runners focus without losing interest in the race half way through.
“We all are fans of zombie movies,” Angelo Cruz, Outbreak Manila organizer, explained. “We like watching zombie shows and it really tickles our imagination and right now, to have it in reality, it's making everyone's summer, I hope."
