Baton Rouge, La — Johnny Jones is the new head men's basketball coach at LSU. Jones replaces Trent Johnson who just took the head coaching job at Texas Christian.
Jones played in the 1981 Final Four as a freshman at LSU, and later served 12 seasons as an assistant coach at LSU under Dale Brown. The pair returned to the 1986 Final Four.
Jones comes home to Baton Rouge after coaching the North Texas 'Mean Green' to five-straight 20-win seasons from 2007-11, two Sun Belt Tournament Championships and NCAA tournament bids.
Tonight nbc33 spoke to talked former LSU Coach Dale Brown to find out what he thinks about the new hire.
The former leader of the tigers says with Jones: "We all got much more than just a basketball coach. We got a person of integrity, humor, superb work ethic, strong-willed, a unifier, a disciplinarian and a bright and pleasant gentleman."
Johnny Jones will be the fifth LSU alum to coach LSU men's basketball. Those men include: R.E. Edmonds, Dale Morey, Jess Fatheree, A.L. Swanson and Johnny Jones.
Morey and Fatheree are the only two prior to Johnny Jones that will have played and coached at LSU.
