ENON, LA (NBC33) — A mother is behind bars tonight after Troopers say she caused a car accident that resulted in the death of her 5 month old child.
Troopers say Brittany Hartfield, 19, of Franklinton was driving west on LA 16 at shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10. For unknown reasons she drifted off the road and struck a bridge guardrail. After the impact her vehicle, a 1998 Mitsubishi Mirage, overturned and landed in a shallow creek bed.
Hartfield was driving with her two children, a 2-year-old girl and 5-month-old son. The 5-month-old was trapped in the submerged vehicle until emergency responders arrived. The infant, Hunter Hartfield, was prounounced dead shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
Britney and her daughter were treated for moderate injuries.
Investigators believe that Hartfield was under the influence at the time of the crash. A sample of her blood was taken for analysis.
Hartfield will be arrested and booked into the Washington Parish Jail on DWI with Child Endangerment and Careless Operation as soon as she's released from the hospital.
Additional charges are expected to be filed.
