St. Amant couple recognized for heroic act

GONZALES, LA — Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez presented a parish certificate of recognition to a St. Amant couple for actions they took during a recent tragic motor vehicle accident.

Toby and Tandy Ragas were presented with the certificate during the Ascension Parish Council meeting held on March 15.

On the night of Tuesday, February 21, the couple responded to a car accident where two local children died. The vehicle they were traveling in left the La. 935 roadway and entered Black Bayou near the St. Amant [1]couple’s home.

While Tandy Ragas summoned emergency response teams, Toby Ragas jumped into Black Bayou where the submerged vehicle was located. Ragas was able to retrieve two of the vehicle’s passengers from the water and bring them safely to shore.
