Baton Rouge, La — The LSU Louisiana Business & Technology Center will host the inaugural Student Incubator Venture Challenge on April 20, 2012, at the Lod Cook Alumni Center.
The first annual Venture Challenge will award $20,000 cash to four student businesses. The two-round competition will provide members of the LSU Student Incubator the opportunity to win seed capital and is considered by LBTC to be instrumental in retaining university graduates in Louisiana and creating jobs for the community.
In the first round of the Venture Challenge, students will submit business plan online for consideration in the competition. A panel of judges will score the plans based on predetermined criteria and choose the top four that will advance to the final round. In this final live round, students will be given 10 minutes to present their plans in front of an audience, followed by 10 minutes of questions from the judges. In both rounds, the panel of judges will be made up of members of the LSU and local business communities. Winners will receive cash awards for the advancement of their ventures.
A series of free workshops will be held in the months leading up to the Venture Challenge at the Louisiana Emerging Technology Center. The “New Venture Workshops” series is open to the public and will provide guidance to entrepreneurs looking to launch or grow their businesses. Participants in the Venture Challenge are encouraged to attend the workshops and meet with Small Business Development Center, or SBDC, consultants for individual counseling. Although the workshops are free, pre-registration is greatly appreciated. More information and registration can be found on the LSBDC website.
Jones Walker law firm is a sponsor of the Venture Challenge, and has provided a $10,000 contribution to the program. Donations to support the Venture Challenge may be made through gifts of checks, cash, credit card, appreciated securities, matching gifts or by visiting www.lsufoundation.org/contribute . Please make checks payable to the LSU Foundation and include “Student Incubator Program Support Fund” in the memo section.
