BATON ROUGE, LA — By correctly spelling words like “ambivalent,” “abdicate,” “lucid” and “democracy” February 25 at the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center Regional Spelling Bee in Hammond, Wedgewood Elementary School fifth grader Karenna Mitchell placed second in the Grades 5-8 Category.
Mitchell represented the East Baton Rouge Parish School District and competed against students representing a total seven parishes and eight school systems. The regional winners move on to the National Scripps Spelling Bee.
As a regional winner, Mitchell received a one-year subscription to Brittannica Online, a $20 Amazon.com gift card and an “Eleventh Edition Meriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary.”
