NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The struggle to find work continues for many Americans, especially veterans.
Their unemployment rate is over twelve percent, almost four percent higher than the general population.
On Wednesday NBC News and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce teamed up for a "Hiring Our Heroes" job fair in New York.
Its one of 400 scheduled around the country this year to get veterans into the civilian work force.
Wednesday also marked the first anniversary of the "Hiring Our Heroes" job fairs.
Their goal: 500,000 hirings of veterans or their spouses by the end of 2014.
"We have one million men and women in uniform that are going to leave the service in the next five years. If we don't do something about this now, we are heading for a train wreck," says founder Kevin Schmiegel, a 20-year Marine Corps veteran.
