BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The building is empty and all the patients from Greenwell Springs Mental Health Hospital are in Jackson, Louisiana tonight.
That move comes after the Greenwell Springs location was shut down today, by DHH.
Mid-year budget cuts forced DHH to close the facility and transfer the 47 patients to the Jackson location. DHH says this decision allows them to save $2-million annually, and still provide the same level of care the patients need.
"Because it's larger with larger client population, you have additional psychiatrists that'll be available, even more frequent level than Greenwell Springs,” Kathy Kliebert, Deputy Secretary of DHH, explained. “Clients will be served at same level."
Seventeen state workers will lose their jobs with the closing of that mental health unit in Greenwell Springs.
