DONALDSONVILLE, LA (NBC33) — A hazmat situation in Donaldsonville shut down LA 18 north at LA 3120 early this morning.
NBC33 News spoke with the plant manager at CF Industries Donaldsonville's Nitrogen Complex and he says that apparently they started a shut down of one of their ammonia plants to avoid a failure
During that shut down a chemical called amine was released into the air.
We're told a person driving by the plant at the time was momentarily blinded by the chemical and crashed his vehicle on the plant property. He was taken to a local hospital and is reportedly doing well.
DEQ is monitoring the situation and the plant says they're doing every thing they can to responsibly clean up the spill.
We'll have more on this story on NBC33 News at 5:00 p.m.
