NBC NATIONAL NEWS — The Malibu Recovery Center is a rehab clinic for the rich and famous.
Its celebrity clients are coming in with a new addiction, beyond street drugs.
Owner Joan Borsten, a veteran of the movie business, says 60 percent of those looking for help are hooked on prescription meds and not just the anti-anxieties like Xanax of Klonopin.
More and more of her clients, she says, are using heavy-hitters like phentonol designed for terminally-ill patients.
One of Joan's clients knew exactly how many milligrams her doctor should prescribe to keep her high.
The musicians and singers who seek Joan's help tell her that because their supplier was a doctor, not a street hustler, that gave them a false sense of security about what they were taking.
Many of Joan clients blame their doctors for not telling them about pill addition, and not spotting the symptoms in time.
The good news is that rehab is possible for prescription meds.
Joan says, it usually takes sixty days of hard detox because pills have a longer half-life than many street drugs.
