East Baton Rouge Parish, La (NBC33) — Local officials braved the storm on Wednesday to help seniors in the Capitol City area get some much needed food.
It's all part of the “Meals for Mayors” program headed by Meals on Wheels, which delivers food to seniors who can't leave their homes and can't cook for themselves.
East Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden, along with other mayors from across the area, delivered more than 400 meals today. He said Meals on Wheels is a vital service for seniors.
"We're finding a lot of people who are in need, in need of food in particular,” stated Holden. “Meals on Wheels has virtually stepped up to the plate, like they always do and making it possible for our senior citizens to have a meal or meals for a month and that really adds to their nutrition."
The mayors of Zachary, Central and Baker also took part in the Meals on Wheels event today. More than 10,000 meals are delivered to needy seniors in the Baton Rouge area every year.
