Baton Rouge, La — Eighth-ranked LSU collected 18 hits Tuesday night, including a pair of home runs, to power past Southern, 15-5, in Alex Box Stadium.
The Tigers improved to 17-4 on the season and will travel to Auburn this weekend for a three-game SEC series at Plainsman Park. Southern dropped to 9-11 with Tuesday's loss.
"I wouldn't say it was an artistic success, but it was a good, solid win," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "We were able give a lot of pitchers some work, and they all did pretty well for the most part. We had some good at-bats with big hits in clutch situations. Overall, I thought it was what we needed heading into a very important series at Auburn."
Nine LSU pitchers combined to limit Southern to five runs on nine hits. Sophomore right-hander Joe Broussard (2-0), the second Tiger pitcher, was credited with the win as he allowed one unearned run in 1.1 innings with no walk and one strikeout.
Southern starter John Thigpen (1-2) was charged with the loss as he surrendered six runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.
LSU was led at the plate by shortstop Austin Nola, who was 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Reserve first baseman Tyler Moore was 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and a three-run, inside-the-park home in the seventh inning.
First baseman Mason Katz, catcher Ty Ross and centerfielder Chris Sciambra each contributed two RBI for LSU.
Jackson Slaid launched a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning for the Tigers, the first dinger of his career.
Rightfielder Wilmy Marrero led Southern with two hits, including a double, and third baseman Cameron McGriff delivered a solo homer for the Jaguars.
