NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Researchers in Spain found that 92 percent of teenagers carry backpacks weighing over 15 pounds, which is more than 10 percent of their own body weight in many cases.
One in four teens said they had back pain for more than 15 days during the previous year, with the most common problems being scoliosis, lower back pain and muscle spasms.
Girls were more at risk of back problems than boys. The most serious problems were found among teens who carried the heaviest backpacks.
