Overland, Kansas — LSU senior pitcher Brittany Mack has been selected as one of 30 softball players from across the country for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS award as announced Wednesday.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Mack is involved with countless community service efforts. This season at Tiger Park, she has created and will champion the "Geaux Play" program.
Through her relationship with Miracle League Association at Cypress Mounds, Mack has challenged the LSU softball community to share the gift of sports with special needs children. Fans will have the opportunity to get involved and donate new or gently used sports equipment starting on Friday, March 9 at the Purple & Gold Challenge during the remaining LSU softball home games at Tiger Park.
All items collected will be given directly to the Miracle League and three local schools that Mack will visit during the season. At LSU's game versus Ole Miss on April 22, Mack will invite all the children to the game as her special VIP guests for "Geaux Play" day at Tiger Park.
On the field, Mack is well on her way to being remembered as one of the all-time great pitchers to wear the Purple and Gold. She is coming off a memorable junior season where she claimed All-SEC First-Team, NFCA All-South Region First-Team and NFCA All-American Third-Team accolades.
For her career, Mack has racked up 40 career victories, compiled a stout 1.94 career ERA and amassed 419 strikeouts. She enters the weekend 56 Ks away from breaking into the program's top five list.
A kinesiology major, Mack carries a 3.60 GPA in the classroom. She has earned spots on the SEC Academic Honor Roll, ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District and an NFCA Scholar-Athlete during her career.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist that best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA Women's College World Series, which will be held May 31-June 6 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
