BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Local artists raised $1,450 at a benefit event held last night for injured cyclist Danny Morris. The fundraiser was held at Mellow Mushroom and organizers say it was a big success.
“There were a little over 100 people there,” Kelly Floyd, organizer of the benefit and local artist, recalled. “The really cool thing is that every one paid more than they had to.”
Artists donated original work and around 70 percent of it was sold last night. Donation buckets were also passed around and money was collected at the door, too.
A special message was also shown at the event.
“Danny’s best friend [Chris Waltman] recorded a video message from Danny and it was played on the patio for everyone,” Floyd explained.
Morris is still recovering from the massive injuries he sustained after being hit by a drunk driver while riding on Perkins Road. He spent 21 days in the hospital, seven of which were spent in a medically induced coma.
“To have this happen to him, I just felt compelled and the need to help out as a community,” Floyd said prior to the night of the benefit. “I thought this would be a good way to help Danny to get him back on his feet.
Morris received the funds today.
