BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The newest extreme sport is prime to take over as a new favorite in Louisiana. A special first-time demonstration will be held tomorrow, Saturday, March 10, behind the BREC Skate Park on Perkins Road.
It’s called Wakeskate and it combines two different extreme sports in a unique way.
“They set up these ramps and rails in the lake and they hold on to a cable that’s not attached to a motorized boat,” Susie Skaggs, Facility supervisor of Extreme sports for BREC, explained. “They are attached to a wench and it pulls the rider across the lake so they can hit all the obstacles.
“They do the same skateboarding tricks when they hit these ramps, so it’s like wake boarding, but they’re not in bindings so they can maneuver the boards and do tricks.”
The demonstration will be completed by Mutiny Wakeskate. A team of five boarders, three of whom are from Louisiana, will show of their best moves on Saturday. For many, this will be the first time this new sport will be seen.
“Wakeskating is one of the newest additions to extreme sports. It’s been within the past five years that it’s become a sport,” Skaggs notes. “Because Louisiana has so much water, we’re a prime spot for wakeskaters to come here.”
Along with the demos, there will be product tosses and live music provided by local skateboarder DJ Bird, aka Chris Culotta.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Skaggs said with excitement. “This is a really big deal for us.”
The demo will be held on the lake located directly behind the Skate Park at the base of the hill. The event will get started at 5:00 p.m., weather permitting.
