CONSUMER ALERT — As spring approaches and the weather starts to improve many of us will be starting home improvement projects. Some of these projects will include outdoor maintenance such as roof repairs, painting, pressure washing, driveway paving and concrete and brick repairs. As we all know, there are people who make their livings preying on others and a lot of these people pass themselves off as legitimate contractors who specialize in the afore mentioned types of work.
Many of these individuals in fact are not legitimate contractors, possess no contractor’s licenses and provide sub standard services.
The Livingston Parish Sheriffs Office is asking that our citizens be made aware of these individuals and are encouraged to contact us if they are approached by persons that come to their residences soliciting work.
If in fact you are approached ask the person for some type of identification, contractors license, references and information about the company he or she represents. Also try and obtain any vehicle information possible, such as brand, type, color and license plate information.
If at all possible don’t let them inside. They are strangers and let them know that any business they have with you does not require their coming inside your residence.
Often times there are multiple people traveling together. While one person is talking with you the others are checking out your residence, outside sheds etc. as to calculate your valuables.
The elderly are especially at risk as they can at times be easily talked into things and can also be easily intimidated.
Protect yourself and look out for your neighbors. Don’t be a victim.
