NBC News — Iran's Supreme Leader welcomed President Obama's comments promoting diplomacy instead of a war as a solution for Iran's nuclear ambition. A report on state TV quoted Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as praising President Obama's recent statement as a "window of opportunity" to resolve the nuclear dispute through diplomacy. It was one of the rare cases in which Iran's Supreme Leader praised an American leader.
Khamenei was less complimentary about sanctions imposed on Iran. Khamenei said the sanctions were designed to separate Iran's people from the Islamic system and that recent elections proved this tactic was a failure. Iran denies charges it is trying to build a nuclear weapon and says its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes. President Obama on March 6th accused republican critics of "beating the drums of war" and said diplomacy could resolve the nuclear issue.
