NBC NEWS — Someone turned their camera on when this huge 550-yard avalanche came sliding down the mountainside at a French ski resort.

Skiers stood stunned as the snow destroyed a ski lift.

An employee of the resort compared the scene to standing on the shoreline during a powerful storm.

Unusually high temperatures may have contributed to the avalanche.
