Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The hundreds of kids that go to Glen Oaks High have something lots of other schools in the parish and the country don't: Security Dads.
Sergeant Thomas Jordan is a Security Dad. He's also the school’s ROTC instructor. The dads are a non-profit group that have one simple goal: just talk to the students.
“Security Dads is really the name of the organization, but they're mentors,” stated Jordan. “They're here with the kids daily. They're here constantly - more than some teachers. Things that go on in the community are just like things that go on in school - just life issues.”
Sergeant Jordan, along with another Security Dad, Tommie Stout, have been patrolling the halls and talking to kids for years. They say the kids are much different than they were 18 years ago when the dads first started.
The dads go on to say by providing the father figure and role model lots of students just don't have at home, it helps.
And that's something Sergeant Jordan says it helps in the halls and down the road, long after the kids graduate.
