Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Youngsters at Wildwood Elementary today rolled up their sleeves to learn about gardening, and eating right.
It's part of the american heart association's national My Heart, My Life campaign.
It focuses on hands on teaching of children and their parents to eat healthier.
The American Heart Association says their studies have shown that kids eat healthier if they're the ones growing the vegetables.
Teachers at Wildwood say they agree, and say teaching kids to eat right early in their lives is a helps them perform better later on.
"By letting them see it grow and actually plant the seeds themselves, water it, watch it grow, we're hoping that it's really going to increase their vegetable and fruit consumption, and hopefully start teaching them to eat healthy," said 5th Grade Teacher, Bridget Cross.
