NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Senate Republicans failed to block President Obama's new birth control rule Thursday.
An amendment that would have repealed the rule failed in a vote that closely mirrored party lines.
The new rule quires all insurance companies to offer contraception as part of health plans, even if the employer providing the plan objects on religious grounds.
Democrats and Republicans both believe this sensitive issue will help them in the upcoming elections.
Hospitals and universities run by religious organizations will have to include contraceptives as part of employee health care coverage, even if they're Catholic organizations.
