Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The state Department of Environmental Quality recognized several groups today for their part in helping reduce pollution.
15 groups received Environmental Leadership Awards. The program recognizes those who go above and beyond to help spread environmental awareness, reduce pollutants and organize community outreach efforts.
As a group, the award winners helped remove more than 342 million pounds of pollutants from the environment.
"It’s a very big deal because these are voluntary projects,” stated Peggy Hatch, secretary of the DEQ. “These people don’t have to do have to do any of these projects. Some are reducing emissions significantly and schools are cycling. It’s just a good message all around."
Five business from the Capitol City area were recognized at today's event.
