NEW ORLEANS, LA (WDSU) — Riding on horseback, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu ushered in Ash Wednesday with dozens of police officers, cruisers and troopers.
Landrieu and the police marched down Bourbon Street announcing that Mardi Gras was officially over at midnight on Wednesday.
Revelers were allowed to go into bars or other businesses, but were cleared from the street so cleaning crews could begin the enormous task of picking up the trash from the famous roadway that brings thousands to New Orleans during the Carnival season.
For the first time, Landrieu marched with law enforcement to end the season.
Share Landrieu said that the move was no different than any other day because the city always presents a united front.
Landrieu said he is proud of how officers handled the crowds during Mardi Gras.
The mayor said the city is looking forward to the next big event – the NCAA men's Final Four.
