MARRERO, LA (WDSU) — Six people -- one, a 13-year-old boy -- were hurt in a shooting in Marrero on Monday night, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s deputies.
The violence happened at Sayres and Constantine drives in the Lincolnshire neighborhood on the Westbank about 8:20 p.m.
Officers responded after receiving numerous calls to the 911 center reporting gunshots in the area.
First responding deputies located multiple victims at various addresses on Sayres Drive, including the 13-year-old victim, who had been shot several times. He was taken to University hospital where doctors said the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
Five other teenagers were also struck. They were identified late Monday as: Akili Dailey, 17; Iren Paul, 18, of Marrero; Davanti Butler, 19, of Marrero; an unnamed 16-year-old from Marrero; and an unnamed 16 year-old from Harvey. Their injuries were also considered not life-threatening.
According to detectives, the victims said they were standing near the corner, waiting for a ride, when the shots were fired. The victims ran from the corner, but said the shooters continued in pursuit while firing at them.
None of the victims reported seeing a vehicle, nor could they identify their assailants. A witness reported seeing a black vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed.
Crimes Scene Technicians collected a "substantial amount" of spent AK-47 shell casings, along with a number of other spent casings consistent with shots from a handgun.
Anyone with information in this matter is asked to call Detective Vasquez at the sheriff's office at (504) 364-5300 or Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
